Landmarks
Shortly after being publicly acclaimed by Robert Schumann for his great talents, a young Johannes Brahms commented: “I shall never write a symphony! You have no idea how it feels to hear behind you the tramp of a giant like Beethoven...” Finally, 23 years after Schumann’s article first appeared, Brahms premiered his Symphony No. 1 in C Minor. It was worth the wait.
Brahms’ First Symphony is a musical landmark, not just for the composer himself, but of the symphonic form. Announcing his arrival as a symphonist with an imposing introduction, Brahms contrasts this throbbing intensity by weaving tender dialogues throughout the central movements demonstrating his transcendent talent and unique voice. It is a masterpiece.
Equally a landmark composition to his oeuvre is Dvořák's gorgeous Cello Concerto in B minor, widely acclaimed as one of the greatest concertos for the instrument. Brimming with Romantic feeling and sublime melodies, it showcases all of the best aspects of the cello.
