the necks
Presented by Top Shelf
Revered music trailblazers and one of Australia’s great cult bands, The Necks, release their 20th studio album ‘Bleed’ and prepare for their next Australian tour.
The new Necks album Bleed explores a sublime language of stillness. With a single, 42-minute composition, The Necks masterfully express the unspeakable beauty of decay and space in yet another totally distinct entry in a vast and stunning body of work.
‘The Necks have become, and remain, one of the most arresting and sophisticated bands on the planet.’ The Quietus (UK)
‘The Necks transmute a procession of simply stated moments into something transcendent. Bleed is more about wayward drift than some of The Necks' most-loved albums, but there's tenderness in its seeming austerity, and beauty in its chill.’ UNCUT UK
The Necks Bleed is available now on vinyl and CD (and digital from 18 October) via The Necks website and Bandcamp. Details for The Necks 2025 Australian tour are via The Necks website.

Denis Carnahan’s Cricket the musical
The 2025 (almost) National Tour
Denis Carnahan is taking his hilarious one man cult hit musical comedy show Cricket The Musical on its first National Tour in 2025. Melbourne, Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane and Canberra - 5 cities for 2025. The 2024/25 cricket season has been filled with controversy and pantomime, from the American World Cup to the touring Indians, and the still fresh drama of Bazball, the Wandering Bairstow, and alleged Lords going feral. So Australia’s hardest working musical sports satirist uses his unique satirical spin to investigate this season, along with the game’s history of treachery, villainy, facial hair, and illegal abrasives. For almost two decades, Carnahan has been producing songs and parodies about the many colourful characters and controversies Australian Sport produces. They go to air weekly on ABC Grandstand, and have previously featured on The Footy Show, Fox Sports, Triple M and many more. His songs about Stuart Broad’s sportsmanship, MCC selection policies, and Mitchell Johnson’s moustache and other sports have had millions of hits on YouTube. Prepare yourself to boo the villains and cheer the heroes as Cricket The Musical brings the songs to life on stage, with videos, sketches and caricatures celebrating the many controversies of this summer’s matches

Travellin’ Still - THE MUSIC OF SLIM DUSTY
Presented by LAING ENTERTAINMENT
When Slim Dusty’s Travelling Country Band played their last full show with Slim in 2002, the band members all went their separate ways.
Fast-forward to 2016, at the Slim Dusty Music Festival in Kempsey, NSW, they found themselves on-stage together for the first time in years. And it felt like only yesterday as the old songs, friendships and memories came flooding back.
One comment from an audience member, “This show has to go on the road!” got them all thinking, why not? There aren’t many bands around where all the members were part of the Slim Dusty Show!
And what an experience this will be; five musicians who will be sharing stories, some of their own music and of course the songs of Slim Dusty which will sound pretty darn genuine because they’ll be played by his own band!

BUCK MEEK AND HIS BAND
SUPPORT: GERMAINE DUNES
Presented by Love Police
BUCK MEEK, lead guitarist of Big Thief, and a solo Artist in his own right, brings his music to Australia this March.
Touring the East Coast with his band, BUCK MEEK shares his soulful songs that will delight all music fans, transporting audiences to the environmental landscapes that inspired his third solo album Haunted Mountain.
This outstanding collection of songs was written by Buck as he ventured across mountains and ranges, from the cold springs in the Serra da Estrela of Portugal, to the submerged volcano of Milos in the Cyclades, and the Valle Onsernone in the Swiss Alps, through to the Santa Monica range the legendary singer/songwriter and magnificent guitarist now calls home.
When Big Thief toured Australia in 2022, audiences were struck by the delicate musicianship of the band. Now we’re back in business with Buck Meek touring the country with his own band, sharing those mind-blowing songs and stories in a new adventure around Australia.
Buck Meek and his band will also support Cat Power at Festival Hall Melbourne, for all other shows he will be sharing the stage with LA-based singer, songwriter and science fiction lover Germaine Dunes.

KRISTIN HERSH
Presented by troubadour presents
To celebrate the release of her acclaimed “Clear Pond Road” album, 2023 saw Kristin Hersh play her first shows in Australia for seven years. A slew of sold out dates during an east coast spring had Kristin reconnect with her favourite country in the world and convinced her that she needed to get back to play again as soon as she could.
Currently in the studio completing another Throwing Muses album for an early 2025 release, Kristin Hersh will be playing headline shows along the east coast and returning to Adelaide and Perth for the first time in a decade, as well as appearing at Port Fairy Folk and Blue Mountains Music festivals.
Troubadour Presents: Kristin Hersh Australian Tour 2025
The inimitable Kristin Hersh is a musician's musician, a songwriter's songwriter, and an innovator's innovator.
Her first band, Throwing Muses, began recording and playing out when they were just 14 years old and they're still going. Their 2020 critically acclaimed Sun Racket album was hailed as "a perfect record”.
“Hersh published an autobiography, Rat Girl: A Memoir, in 2010, and Clear Pond Road similarly looks back on her extraordinary life…like Hersh herself, the album resists convention and refuses to be pinned down. 4 stars” - Slant Magazine
"One of indie rock's most fascinating figures" - The Guardian
Wildly prolific, she has released more than 20 albums solo, with Throwing Muses and with her noise rock band, 50 Foot Wave.
She's also a celebrated author: Rolling Stone named her first book, Rat Girl, one of the ten best rock memoirs of all time.
NPR said of her second book, Don't Suck, Don't Die, "...one of the most beautiful rock memoirs ever written."
Her third, the game-changing Seeing Sideways, pushes the envelope of creative non-fiction while telling the story of raising her 4 sons on a tour bus.
Kristin’s ‘Clear Pond Road’ album is a cinematic road trip; a series of personal vignettes from a fiercely independent auteur, sitting plush with layers of all-consuming strings and mellotron. It’s a watershed moment in a career overflowing with creative firsts and inspirational thinking; an elegant piece of personal reportage, a home movie caught in time.
QUOTES ON KRISTIN HERSH
“Few artists understand the intensity of living one’s art like Hersh” - The Guardian
"Kristin Hersh is a musical genius" - Huffington Post
"A fearless rock innovator" - New York Times
“There are not many musicians who can process and distill their personal experience into art as skillfully as Hersh does, and few bodies of work can stand comparison with the series of powerful and affecting albums she has produced over the past few decades.”
- Spectrum Culture
"The work of an artist both singular and shape-shifting, always herself but never predictable"
– Uncut
"The portal to Hersh's carefully documented world of otherness" - Mojo
"A stunning, stealthy, faintly malevolent collection of songs" - Q

MUIREANN BRADLEY & JON MUQ
LOVE POLICE PresentS
Love Police invite you to discover their two latest international stars this March.
MUIREANN BRADLEY and JON MUQ, making their Australian debut in a nostalgic adventure through old-worldly folk and rhythm and blues along the East Coast on a sweet double bill, and an evening of song.
Hailing from Ballybofey in County Donegal, Muireann Bradley is a 17-year-old folk and blues guitarist, with a knack for performing acoustic fingerpicking country, piedmont and ragtime blues styles taking audiences back to musical traditions from the 1920s through to the ‘40s across folk, country and Americana.
Releasing her debut album, I Kept These Old Blues in 2023, Muireann has since toured Europe, sharing her sentimental songs with sold out crowds along the way.
For JON MUQ, a singer-songwriter born in Uganda and now living in Austin, Texas, this tour also marks his first Australian run. Drawing from African as well as western musical trends and traditions, Muq’s music is a precious gift to audiences as he shares his stories, culture and voice with audiences around the world. Whether that is through his tours with Billy Joel, Norah Jones, and Mavis Staples or from his debut album, Flying Away, produced by Dan Auerbach.
MUIREANN BRADLEY and JON MUQ: two divine musical storytellers, on the one double act run up and down the East Coast.

ruthie foster - heartshine australian tour
Multiple Grammy® nominee and winner of several Blues Music Awards, Ruthie Foster's musical journey is as eclectic and vibrant as her soulful voice.
Born into a family steeped in gospel tradition, Ruthie's earliest influences were the voices of her mother, grandmother, and the gospel singers she grew up listening to — artists like the Gospel Keynotes and the Blind Boys of Alabama. However, her path to becoming a solo artist wasn't a straightforward one. Despite a deep love for music, Ruthie initially shied away from the spotlight, preferring to play guitar, piano, and write songs for others.
Growing up in the rich musical tapestry of Gause, Texas, Ruthie found herself drawn to the diverse sounds and arrangements of local gospel choirs and musicians. Despite her reluctance to take centre stage, Ruthie's talent was undeniable, and her mother encouraged her to step up and sing out. She stood out as a young black girl with a guitar in a choir scene dominated by pianos, but with her grandmother’s vocal coaching and encouragement from her mother and the church community, she recognised her own power — as a songwriter, a musician, and as a captivating singer.
Now, with a new album, Mileage, recently released on Sun Records, Ruthie Foster stands as a testament to the power of authenticity and resilience in music

The East pointers
Adding to their volumes of East Coast myth-making, The East Pointers’ forthcoming anthology of celebratory anthems and incendiary tune sets is a natural evolution of playing to ‘hometown’ crowds of thousands the world over, full family kitchen parties and an honest reckoning with heartbreak and victory.
Still channeling Koady Chaisson as a writing partner, Tim Chaisson (fiddle, vocals, guitar) and Jake Charron (keys, guitar, vocals) have alchemised the love, grief and experience of years of musical map-making, traveling, partying and friendship into an album that captures heroic joy, sharp pain, courageous expansion, lonely challenges and triumphant homecoming.
In their ten year career, The East Pointers have gathered many accolades, winning a JUNO for their debut album Secret Victory and further nominations for their double EP House of Dreams and Safe in Sound, and multiple East Coast Music and Music PEI awards.
Alongside traveling the world and supporting their community through such initiatives as Koady’s Stay Cool Swim Cold challenge, which has raised thousands of dollars for diverse charities, and Annedemic: The East Pointers and Friends Read Anne of Green Gables, they are also the founding directors of Goolaholla! festival, a gift of love and music to Tim and Koady’s hometown of Souris.
Their base in Canada’s smallest province, Prince Edward Island, provides both inspiration and challenge, and a sensibility tempered by grueling winters, short-lived golden summers and a tight-knit community of some of the best songwriters and musicians in the world.
Confidently grounded by the band’s traditional roots and spotlighting their most honest songwriting to date in an album that is jubilant, entrancing and frank by turns, The East Pointers continue their legacy of packing the dancefloor while celebrating the Sisyphian task of being human.

barry adamson
Barry Adamson has been creating all of his life.
Brought up in Manchester’s Moss Side, Adamson learnt to play the bass overnight for Magazine, Manchester’s most influential band of that era.
When they disbanded, five albums later in 1981, his singular style was spotted by The Birthday Party, with whom he played several times.
His establishment as a solo artist came after a three-year stint with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds with the release of his classic first solo album, Moss Side Story – the ultimate soundtrack to an “imaginary film” – which raised Adamson’s name as a composer of diverse complexity; able to tell a story with music, where the images were those supplanted in the minds of the listeners. Adamson has worked with some of the film industry’s most intriguing mavericks including Derek Jarman (The Last of England, 1987), David Lynch (The Lost Highway, 1997), Oliver Stone (Natural Born Killers, 1994) and Danny Boyle (The Beach, 2000).
Having released nine studio albums, including the 1992 Mercury Music Prize nominated Soul Murder, 1996’s Oedipus Schmoedipus, which includes collaborations with Jarvis Cocker, Nick Cave and The Associates’ Billy McKenzie, and his most recent release, Know Where To Run, which was in part inspired by a US tour, playing with Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds.
After 32 years, Adamson’s talents are as much demand by new generations of artists as he was after his first solo release, with collaborations in recent years across a variety of art forms, including an Olivier Award winning ballet performance by Sylvie Guillem and the Ballet Boyz scored by Adamson.
It was always a logical progression for Adamson to move behind the camera and once again his brooding film noir style and dark comedy has seen him write, direct and score a number of short films, including ‘The Swing The Hole and The Lie’’ (2014) as well as the 2017 video for They Walk Amongst Us.
Barry Adamson’s most recent release ‘Memento Mori’ (Anthology 1978-2018), brings together the artist’s writing and recording career over the last 40 years charting his career from 1978’s Magazine track, ‘Parade’ (co-written by Adamson, from their debut album Real Life); to his work as founding member, alongside Nick Cave, of the Bad Seeds (‘From Her To Eternity’, co-written by Adamson); through his nine solo albums, from 1989’s Moss Side Story to the latest Love Sick Dick EPs, bringing everything up to date with a brand new unreleased track, ‘The Hummingbird’.
Barry Adamson’s memoir ‘Up Above The City, Down Beneath The Stars’ is published by Omnibus Press on 30 September 2021.
Musician, composer, writer, photographer, filmmaker. Barry Adamson is not a man to take it easy.

THE STEMS
West Australian garage rock legends The Stems made a triumphant return to the live stage to celebrate their 40th anniversary in August and September of 2024 with a series sold out shows across Australia and Europe. The hugely successful tour meant that some fans missed out on tickets, so back by public demand, original members, Dom Mariani, Julian Matthews, and Dave Shaw and acclaimed guitarist Ashley Naylor (Even/Paul Kelly/The Church) are set to do again in late April with a run of selective shows across the east coast of Australia.
The Stems attained their own legendary status in the Australian and International music scene – roaring out of Perth with a sound and style that definitively captured the spirit and enthusiasm of sixties garage music - lurching fuzz-tone guitars, brooding organ, solid gold garage-punk, and primo power pop! The Stems not only created a distinctive sonic identity but also penned unforgettable songs while delivering electrifying live performances.
In the late '80s, The Stems achieved acclaim with a series of singles and EPs and the timeless 'At First Sight – Violet are Blue' LP in 1987. The group disbanded in late 1987 and made a significant comeback in 2003, playing to sold-out crowds nationwide. Since then, they have continued to tour regularly in front of audiences across Australia, Europe, Japan, and the United States.

PARIS, PIANOS, PEINTURES
Presented by BETTY NICHOLSON AND lYN PANETTA
Brisbane music educators and accompanists Betty Nicholson and Lyn Panetta met in their teens while they were studying music at the University of Queensland, and it was there that they discovered the magic and fun of playing two piano works together.
They have explored many two-piano arrangements from the repertoire and performed Holst’s The Planets at the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium in 2022 (Planets, Pianos and Projections) and Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition at the Petrie Terrace Art Gallery in 2023 (Pictures, Pianos and Portrayals) as part of both the Anywhere and Brisbane Fringe Festivals.
In Paris, Pianos, Peintures, Bizet’s Carmen Suites, Chabrier’s Espana, Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun and Nocturnes, Faure’s Dolly Suite, Ravel’s Miroirs and Satie’s Trois Morceaux en Forme de Poire come to life via the magic of two pianos.

London Airs
presented by Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra
Metro Series Concert #4
The BPO’s final concert of the year is a journey of some of the world’s finest British composers, both to their homes and abroad.
Intended as a depiction of Italy, Elgar wrote Alassio while on a family holiday.
“… in a flash, it all came to me – the conflict of the armies on that very spot long ago, where I now stood – the contrast of the ruin and the shepherd – and then, all of a sudden, I came back to reality. In that time I had composed the overture – the rest was merely writing it down.”
Next, Imants Larsens takes the stage as soloist for Walton’s passionate Viola Concerto, one of the instrument’s most celebrated concerti. Finally, Vaughan Williams, in his London Symphony, pays homage to the city that played a large role in both his life and career.
SUNDAY 17 NOVEMBER 3PM
THE OLD MUSEUM CONCERT HALL, BOWEN HILLS
Conductor: David Deacon
Soloist: Imants Larsens (viola)

Ben Ottewell & Ian Ball (from Gomez)
CELEBRATING 25 YEARS OF BRING IT ON & LIQUID SKIN
WITH SPECIAL GUEST BUDDY
They just can’t leave us alone! Our good pals BEN OTTEWELL and IAN BALL (from GOMEZ) return for an annual jaunt, this time with a special 25-year anniversary celebration of two of their band’s out-of-this-world albums, BRING IT ON and LIQUID SKIN.
Since its first release way back in the good times of 1998, Ben & Ian’s break-out album BRING IT ON, delivered under the guise of GOMEZ, earned the band multi-platinum sales, chart topping success and the very distinguished Mercury Prize.
With a collective of fans spanning three continents and repertoire covering almost three decades, the duo’s infectious melodies, bluesy riffs and charismatic live performance will stick with audiences as much as LIQUID SKIN filled our musical cavities back in 1999.
Hark back to those glory days of Triple J, and a new millennium, and a fight in a music shop sound that we all loved from Gomez.
Expect all the gold from BRING IT ON and LIQUID SKIN and a whole lot more this October and November.
Joining Ben & Ian on their Australian voyage is our favourite Gomez-inspired troubadour, BUDDY.

qais essar - Echoes of the unseen
Presented worlds within worlds
A master of the rabab, Qais Essar is a critically acclaimed contemporary Afghan composer, instrumentalist, and producer who channels his melodic designs through the lute-like instrument of Afghanistan.
With a musical output as unique as it is diverse, Qais delves deep into the world of Indian and Afghan folk and classical music. From composing for Oscar-nominated films such as The Breadwinner, to captivating audiences at SXSW and The Kennedy Centre, he draws upon a vast range of influences spanning film and chamber music, American folk, and contemporary rock. In his debut performance at The Old Museum, witness ‘timeless, spellbinding music that wraps itself around you, and won’t let go’ (Sydney Morning Herald).
In Afghanistan, music faces an existential threat, leading to a decreed ban on music performance and musicians encountering life-threatening violence and condemnation. Qais Essar’s creative voice stands as more important and relevant than ever. Drawing from the rich folk and classical traditions of India and Afghanistan, hear expansive, emotional, and thought-provoking works by one of the most profound rabab performers in the world.
Special guests
Accompanying Qais Essar is Shen Flindell, a Brisbane-based tabla player. Since being initiated into the Benares Gharana of tabla by one of the great old masters of the style in 1994, Shen Flindell has grown to become one of Australia’s leading tabla players.

halfway - any old love 10th anniversary show
Presented by halfway
Its been 10 years since Halfway’s Any Old Love was released and in celebration Halfway for One Night Only will perform the critically acclaimed record cover to back.
A QUEENSLAND classic, but you don’t have to know anything about the settings, the landscapes or the backstory to be swept away by Any Old Love. The songs alone are enough to do that, wherever you live.
Like any great piece of art, and I have no doubt that Any Old Love is that, everything is there before you to discover for yourself. It’s the kind of album that gets into the marrow, that keeps you thinking about it even when you’re not playing it, rich in layers and details, in the lyrics, in the instrumentation, arrangements, even in the cover art.
If the listener seeks extra guidance there is a glossary in the liner notes to explain certain references, that the Shakespeare Hotel is in Barcaldine, that Callaghan Park is the home of the Rockhampton Jockey Club, and the stories behind racehorses such as 1995 Melbourne Cup winner Doriemus and Dulcify, the favourite for the 1979 Cup who broke down in that race and was put down.
There is a theme which connects the songs on this fourth and finest album by Brisbane band Halfway, and that is based on stories imagined around the Shakespeare and a central character who is an ex-jockey working out west.
Any Old Love was produced by Robert Forster. Recorded by Phil Graham at QUT Gasworks Studios, Brisbane. Assisted by Tom Hunt. Mixed by Phil Graham. All mixing & overdubs at Electric Monk Studio, Brisbane. Co-produced by John Willsteed & Peter Jesperson. Mastered by Bob Weston at Chicago Mastering Service.
NB: This is a STANDING Event. There will be a limited number of seats available for those that need them.

From The New World
presented by Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra
Metro Series Concert 3
Little else can be said about the New World Symphony, which boasts one of the most beautiful and well known movements of the entire classical canon. Conducted by the internationally acclaimed Steven Moore, the work blends Dvořák’s European classicism with folk music influence and sweet, lyrical poignancy.
Equally poignant is Wagner’s portrayal of doomed lovers, the Prelude and Liebestod. A searingly profound and intense exploration of longing, the Prelude is followed by Chausson’s song cycle lamenting love and loss.

Markus Zusak - Three Wild Dogs and the Truth
Presented by AVID reader
Join us at the Old Museum for the Brisbane launch of Three Wild Dogs and the Truth by Markus ZusakABOUT THE BOOK
ABOUT THE BOOK
There's a madman dog beside me, and the hounds of memory ahead of us. It's love and beasts and wild mistakes, and regret, but never to change things...
What happens when the Zusaks open their family home to three big, wild, pound-hardened dogs - Reuben, a wolf at your door with a hacksaw; Archer, blond, beautiful, deadly; and the rancorously smiling Frosty, who walks like a rolling thunderstorm?
The answer can only be chaos: there are street fights, park fights, public shamings, property trashing, bodily injuries, stomach pumping, purest comedy, shocking tragedy, and carnage that needs to be seen to be believed ... not to mention the odd police visit at some ungodly hour of the morning.
There is a reckoning of shortcomings and failure, a strengthening of will, but most important of all, an explosion of love - and the joy and recognition of family.
From one of the world's great storytellers comes a tender, motley and exquisitely written memoir about the human need for both connection and disorder; but it's also a love letter to the animals who bring hilarity and beauty - but also the visceral truth of the natural world - straight to our doors and into our lives, and change us forever.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Markus Zusak is the international bestselling author of six novels, including The Messenger, Bridge of Clay and The Book Thief - one of the most loved books of the twenty-first century and a New York Times bestseller for more than a decade. His work is translated into more than fifty languages, and has been awarded numerous honours around the world, ranging from literary prizes to bookseller and readers choice awards. His books have also been adapted into film, television and theatre. He was born in Sydney, and still lives there with his wife, two children, and the last dog standing in a once thriving household of animals. Three Wild Dogs (and the truth) is his first book of non-fiction.

Thomas Mayo - Always Was, Always Will Be
Presented by AVID reader
join us for the exclusive Brisbane launch of Always Was, Always Will Be by Thomas Mayo.j
ABOUT THE BOOK
Although the majority of the country chose to vote ‘No’ in the October 2023 referendum, nearly 6 million people voted ‘Yes’, and more than 70,000 volunteers around the country actively campaigned for the Yes 23 campaign. For many people this was the first time they had taken part in a campaign and the first time they’d had conversations on the streets, at train stations and around kitchen tables in support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and the issues they face. After the failed Voice to Parliament referendum supporters and
volunteers have been asking for guidance as to how to continue to support Indigenous recognition.
For the thousands of people who have been feeling sad, empty and powerless since 14 October 2023, Always Was, Always Will Be is a positive rallying cry. Mayo reminds us that we won’t take ‘No’ for an answer; that we’ll find a way. He discusses what that really involves and offers practical and thoughtful ideas about what we can all do now. For the 6 million Australians who voted ‘yes’ at the referendum this book maps the path toward next steps on how to create a fairer Australia. Thomas writes about his own experiences during the campaign, offering a call to action and suggestions that will build on the work done by the volunteers during the Yes 23 campaign. He looks at ways to foster resilience, build movements, develop campaign tactics and strategies with and without financial backers. A must-read from one of the most respected Indigenous voices in the country, Always Was, Always Will Be is a book for those people who want to keep the positive momentum going and the number of allies growing. It’s for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people who are ready to do everything they can to close the gap.
ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Thomas Mayo is a Kaurareg Aboriginal and Kalkalgal, Erubamle Torres Strait Islander man. He is the National Indigenous Officer of the MUA. Thomas is a signatory of the Uluru Statement from the Heart and has been a leading advocate since its inception in May 2017. He is the Chairperson of the Northern Territory Indigenous Labor Network, advises the Diversity Council of Australia and the From the Heart campaign, and is an executive member of the Northern Territory Trades and Labour Council. Thomas has previously written five books published by Hardie
Grant, and has articles and essays published in The Guardian, Griffith Review and Sydney Morning Herald.
Thomas is the author of Finding the Heart of The Nation, Dear Son, Finding The Heart, Freedom Day and The Voice to Parliament Handbook with Kerry O’Brien. The Voice to Parliament Handbook won the 2024 ABIA award for Book of the Year, Social Impact Book of

Dr Karl Kruszelnicki - A Periodic Tale: My Sciencey Memoir
Join us for the launch of Dr Karl's long awaited memoir
A Periodic Tale
How did a shy Polish immigrant kid - Karl Sven Woytek Sas Konkovitch Matthew Kruszelnicki - evolve into the fabulously eccentric Dr Karl?
The only child of Holocaust survivors who fled to Australia in 1950, Karl has always forged his own destiny in an idiosyncratic way. Before he became one of the world's favourite scientific storytellers, he ambled through a convoluted cacophony of a career.
In the 1960s, he got his start as a physicist at the Port Kembla Steelworks and promptly joined the Steel Industries Auto Club, racing modified rally cars on Wollongong's deserted back roads. In the 1970s, he entered his self-described 'drug-crazed hippie years', making a living as a long-haired, dope-smoking taxi driver. After he applied to be a NASA astronaut in the 1980s and 'failed', he ended up live broadcasting the first space shuttle launch on Triple J instead. Unexpectedly, that blasted off his media career, and from there it was a stratospheric rise from radio to TV, books, newspapers, speaking, podcasts and the internet.
Karl's story teaches us that you don't have to know all the answers, as long as you ask the right questions. He has wandered down more than a dozen career paths, from being a TV weatherman (really) to a professional four-wheel drive tester in the outback (really) to being a roadie for Bo Diddley (really). All of these seemingly random experiences have helped create the Karl we know today.
In this long-awaited memoir, you will learn that it's okay to not take a linear path through life, and that by following our curiosities and our passions, we can bend the universe to our liking.
