Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra Metro Series #1
Moonlight and Majesty
Metro Series Concert #1
Sunday 23 April, 3pm-5pm with intermission
Old Museum, Concert Hall
Conductor: Michael Keen
Debussy (Orch: Stokowski) | Clair de lune
Kodály | Háry János Suite
Rachmaninoff | Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Op. 44
Our 2023 season opens in the soft flicker of moonlight with Debussy’s timeless Clair de lune, masterfully imagined for orchestra by the great Lepold Stokowski.
Conductor, Michael Keen, will then lead the orchestra on a journey through the wondrous and majestic exploits of Háry János – the daydreaming veteran of the Napoleonic wars, colourfully recounting tales of his loves, journeys, and his single-handed defeat of Napoleon's armies. Kodály said about Háry:
“His tales are not true, but that is not the point. They are the fruits of his lively fantasy, which creates for himself and for others a beautiful world of dreams…We all dream of the great and impossible. Few of us master, like Hary, the courage to utter our dreams.”
Rachmaninoff’s Third Symphony is one that suffers a relative (and unjustified) neglect in the shadow of its symphonic predecessor. The work features all the hallmarks which make Rachmaninoff an audience favourite – gorgeous melodies, sweeping sculptural lines, and superb use of orchestral colours. From its melancholy openings to its celebratory conclusion, the symphony is indeed one of Rachmaninoff’s strongest and most original compositions.
