Brisbane Philharmonic Orchestra Metro Series #2
Spirit of the Wild
Metro Series Concert #2
Saturday 24 June, 7pm
Old Museum, Concert Hall
Conductor: Steven Moore
Soloist: Callum Hogan (oboe)
Mendelssohn | The Hebrides (Fingal’s Cave)
Nigel Westlake | Spirit of the Wild (concerto for oboe) (Queensland Premiere)
Tchaikovsky | Symphony No.6 B minor, Op. 74 (Pathétique)
Nigel Westlake’s oboe concerto, Spirit of the Wild, was inspired by Bathurst Harbour – a pristine waterway on the South West Coast of Tasmania contained within the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The wild rivers and rugged coastlines form the backdrop of the work as the soloist evokes the soulful expansiveness of the landscape, but also its natural vitality in swirling and virtuosic rhythmic patterns, riffs and sequences. We are thrilled to welcome oboist Callum Hogan of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra to perform the work with us.
Also inspired by rugged coastlines (although those of The Hebrides in North West Coast of Scotland), Mendelssohn’s Fingal’s Cave is instantly recognisable from its opening motif depicting the surging waves collecting at the cave’s entrance.
Our concert concludes with Tchaikovsky’s mature and contemplative masterpiece; his Symphony No. 6 ‘Pathétique’.
