We welcome back maestro Chen Yang to open this program with the explosive energy of Dvořák’s Carnival Overture. Rising cello star Joshua Jones will then take to the stage to perform Tchaikovsky’s charming Rococo Variations.
The second half of our concert features Berlioz’s epic programmatic masterpiece for large orchestra: Symphonie Fantastique. The work is a musical self-portrait of Berlioz where we witness successive scenes from his romantic life, and his self-destructive passion for a beautiful woman. This ‘symphonic episode’ in five parts traces a path from youthful enchantment to delirious desire. On first seeing his ideal woman, the protaganist falls desperately in love and is rocked by contradictory emotions (Rêveries, Passions). In successive movements, the haunting, inaccessible beloved reappears, first in visions (at a ball, in the countryside), then in nightmares (at the protagonist's execution, in a Satanic coven).
