We are beyond excited to welcome back maestro Steven Moore, Chorusmaster of the Royal Danish Opera Chorus, to lead our second Metro Series performance.
Vocalist, conductor and composer Amber Evans returned to Australia after completing a contemporary classical Masters at Manhattan School of Music, NYC and subsequently working as a freelance artist throughout the US. Amber and BPO will be performing the Australian premiere of Leino Songs by eminent Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. In Leino Songs, Saariaho expertly weaves the words of pioneer Finnish poet, Eino Leino, throughout masterful and crystalline orchestrations creating a captivating filigree of serene sound and texture.
Mahler’s fourth symphony is unique to his symphonic output in that the orchestra used is ‘modest’ by the composer’s standards – heavy in woodwinds but without the low brass (trombones and tuba). The thematic material of the work is largely conveyed without the tense or formidable components otherwise found in Mahler’s symphonies and a charming innocence and congeniality is conveyed throughout.
As the focal point and final movement of Symphony No. 4, Mahler expands his 1892 setting of the poem ‘Das Himmlische Leben’ (The Heavenly Life) with text representing a child’s vision of heaven. We emerge from the Symphony in a glow of serenity and peace.
