We open our 2022 season under the baton of maestro Simon Hewett where we will deliver a truly remarkable Queensland premiere – a rare performance of Shostakovich’s Symphony No.4.

Our concert opens with Samuel Barber’s Adagio for Strings – undoubtedly one of the twentieth century’s great classical masterpieces known for its soaring and heart-wrenching beauty. Guest soloist Adam Chalabi then joins us to perform Barber’s brilliant and lyrical Violin Concerto.

At the time of composing his fourth symphony, Shostakovich’s internationally successful opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk had been condemned by the communist party newspaper, Pravda, in an article entitled ‘Muddle Instead of Music’. The scathing editorial piece had its intended effect on Shostakovich who withdrew the fourth symphony during initial rehearsals in 1936, saying that he felt that the work required revision, and as a whole suffered from ‘grandiosomania’. His fourth symphony would lay dormant for 25 years (some years after Stalin’s death), but despite the criticisms of the regime, the definitive version of the symphony remained unchanged from the original.

The fourth symphony calls for the largest orchestra of any of Shostakovich’s symphonies and is one his least performed. The extravagant symphonic universe in the fourth symphony is on a scale directly comparable with Mahler, who was undoubtedly a key inspiration for the work.
