IMITATION OF LIFE (1959)
Directed by Douglas Sirk. 125mins.
Stars Lana Turner, John Gaven, Sandra Dee, Juanita Moore, Susan Kohner, Dan O'Herlihy, Robert Alda, Mahalia Jackson.
An aspiring actress and single mother takes in an African-American widow whose mixed race daughter, struggling with her race identity, tries desperately to be seen as white.
In Sirk's final American film he pulls out all the stops in dealing with this very sensitive topic in still segregated 1950's America. He transcends the oft dismissed genre of melodrama providing us with an intriguing piece of comment on contemporary America and much irony under an abundance of eye popping plush. Possibly one of the greatest melodrama's ever produced by Hollywood. Have Kleenex at hand!
One screening only! Not to be missed on the big screen!
Presented in sparkling 2K DCP Digital with superb audio from our vintage cinema sound system.
